This small district is located from West 14th Street south to Gansevoort Street, from the Hudson River east to Hudson Street. The area was active back in the 1800s as a hub for open-air markets, pork and veal packers, lumberyards, and tenements. Streets are mostly cobblestone, and surrounding the area are a number of tucked-away, nightclubs, art galleries, and stylish late-night eateries, luring in a subculture all of its own. By day, butchers and meatpackers work hard in wholesale meat companies, and by night you’ll stumble upon fashionistas, creative types, and night owls looking for a place to settle. Notable areas include the High Line, the Ground Zero Museum Workshop, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
