Last year the Metropolitan Museum of Art unveiled a $65 million entrance plaza – this year, a 180,000 sqft expansion is planned for the already 2 million sqft landmarked museum on East 86th Street.
The project is being led by British starchitect Sir David Chipperfield, whose design proposals will include galleries for works from Oceania, Africa, and the Americas, as well as a terraced rooftop overlooking Central Park and Museum Mile. Daniel Brodsky, chairman of the Met’s board, explained that the new addition won’t be any taller than the existing buildings, so views from the magnificent luxury residences along Museum Mile will remain unobstructed.
Speaking of Museum Mile, we’ve got some luxe residential buildings along Fifth Avenue on Central Park that are as stunning as an exhibit as the Met.
1214 Fifth Avenue — Located at 4 East 102nd Street, 1214 Fifth Avenue is a Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects-designed 50-story high rise with a striking, ultramodern glass and stone facade and landscaped drive-through courtyard. The luxury rental apartments inside feature soaring ceilings, hardwood flooring, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering sweeping Central Park and Upper East Side views.
The amenities package at 1215 Fifth Avenue is as luxurious as the views — the full-service building has a 24-hour doorman and concierge, residents’ eat-in lounge, private screening room, and landscaped rooftop deck offering panoramic views of Central Park and the skyline. There is also a fully-equipped fitness center with a 60’ indoor pool and underground on-site parking.

Gourmet kitchens feature state-of-the-art appliances, granite countertops, and top-of-the-line dishwashers and elegant bathrooms offer granite, marble, or tiled finishes. Many residences have built-in washer/dryers.
