After years and years of delays, Forest City Ratner has agreed to accelerate the building of affordable housing at its Atlantic Yards development. The development was announced on December 11, 2003 and has since weathered lawsuits, multiple architects, and a recession. Now, after negotiations with the de Blasio administration, state officials, and community groups, the pace will hasten.

New Bill Could Freeze Rent for 24,000 NYC Seniors

Margaret Chin a Manhattan City Councilwoman introduced a new bill on April 10th that would greatly benefit the senior community living in New York City today. This proposed bill would put a rent freeze on senior citizens that are currently earning $50,000 or less annually.

Mayor de Blasio has so far stayed in consistency with his plan to create more affordable housing here in NYC. One method of making NYC a more affordable city would be pursuing a renters’ freeze of regulated rents. The Rent Guidelines Board, which is comprised of nine people, had five seats on this board that were recently up for re-appointment or new appointments in March. De Blasio had finally filled these five of the nine seats. The other four seats left for re/new-appointment will be filled in December 2014.

Big news in Brooklyn: Two Trees Management Company began building on the Dock Street site in DUMBO. This building had received plentiful opposition because it will be blocking views of the Brooklyn Bridge. Celebrities even chimed into the decided opposition with protesters including, Helen Hunt, Gabriel Byrne, Gary Sinise, Ana Gasteyer, and more. Surviving this opposition, the Dock Street mixed-use building is currently ascending into the rendering that was released late last year.
