New York City renters are hoping that Mayor de Blasio will follow through with his campaign promise of a renting freeze. The NYC Mayor will be appointing the nine members that make up the Rent Guidelines Board (RGB). This board decides how much regulated rents will increase per year.

When the Domino Sugar Refinery along the Williamsburg waterfront closed its doors for good in 2004, the community grumbled collectively over the plans to redevelop the waterfront with unattractive, soulless buildings. But when Two Trees bought the property in 2012 for $185 million, they completely altered the design, added more park space, added office space for tech companies, and promised to provide 660 affordable apartments. This building had received plentiful opposition because it will be blocking views of the Brooklyn Bridge. Celebrities even chimed into the decided opposition with protesters including, Helen Hunt, Gabriel Byrne, Gary Sinise, Ana Gasteyer, and more. Surviving this opposition, the Dock Street mixed-use building is currently ascending into the rendering that was released late last year.
